Beyond Brown: How to Incorporate a Little Color Into Your Daily Life

I recently was talking to a woman who told me that she only owned neutral colored eye-shadows. Naturally, I was disappointed. This woman owns clothing of every color, so why did she not expand her palette beyond brown.  Browns, creams and taupes are helpful and what I like to call “wardrobe builders”.  They give a good base, but need a little something to pull the whole look together.

The first issue I commonly hear in objection to wearing a colored shadow is “what color?”.  Depending on eye, hair and skin colors the answer is different.  With lines like MAC, Urban Decay, Napoleon Perdis and Makeup Forever the color options provide a never-ending palette to play with.  There is a green, blue, wine, purple, gold for almost everyone.  Just like finding the perfect fit in jeans, you have to try on a few dozen to know what looks best.

Don’t forget the value of using color in different ways. Do you want your eye to “pop” or are you looking for the makeup to make the impact?  There are appropriate times for each.  I see too many women that find one thing that works and stick with it.  Ok that’s a good start, but is that fun?  Do these women buy the same flattering pant in every color and wear them on a daily basis?  I’m guessing not.  As funny as it is, I get requests from husbands/boyfriends all the time asking me to teach their women how to do “stripper” makeup.  I’m sure that these men are not hoping for this look on a daily basis, but there are occasions where this would be an appropriate departure from the old standby.  No one wants to look overly made up on a daily basis.  This should not scare us away from experimenting once in a while.
Hopefully this will inspire you to go out and try some color.  Please share with the rest of us what colors you love and by whom.  If you are still afraid, please share why.  I might be able to help.

My favorite palette of color is the Urban Decay Deluxe Shadow palette.  It has safety colors like a copper, light pink and cool brown.  It also has fuchsia, green, yellow gold, black, deep blue and aqua.  You can mix the colors to create new ones or use them to line with.  The deluxe shadow have a satin finish, which makes them really pretty for most occasions.
