The N.S.P.S. to Beauty: Facial Hair

The Not-So-Pretty-Secrets to Beauty.  We all have them.  Little things we’d prefer to keep hidden from the general public.

One of mine…Facial Hair.  Ever since I was in grade school I have had facial hair.  Call them side burns, mutton chops, whatever, I have always had two glowing copper strips running down my face to my jaw line.  Not dark enough to make me look like an Irish Elvis, but in the sunlight they gleam and glow.  Attractive, I know.  I have been removing them for the last 15 years in a variety of ways.  So I’d thought I’d share some of my best and worst in-case you should find yourself sporting a little unwanted facial hair.

Shaving:  Yep, I did when I was younger.  Big problem with shaving is that if you have peach fuzz on your face (which most of us do), you will have a very subtle line (kinda like a VPL) that will show if you use any make-up.  The grow back is also a pain.  Because the hairs are cut off the hair doesn’t have a soft tapered edge, there for when it grows back in it feels stiff and thick.  It can also cause in-grown hairs and irritation.

Waxing:  Being as fair as I am, when I get waxed I turn a beautiful shade of magenta for several hours.  The hair does stay away for about 2 - 3 weeks, but my hair grows a little faster than most.  The average person could do it about once a month.  I have found two problems with waxing however.  I still get the line.  The cheek VPL pops up and is somewhat noticiable unless I wax my entire face.  I also tend to break out a little more.

Cream Bleach:  Works ok.  Red hair doesn’t bleach really easily, so my results have been really spotty.  I haven’t found a bleach strong enough for red hair, that isn’t too strong for my skin.

Dipilatory/Cream Hair Removal:  This disolves the hair that is above the skin.  Similar result to waxing, but doesn’t last as long.  Can irritate the skin, depending on the strength.  I have a similar problem with these as with bleach.  If they are strong enough to remove stubborn hairs, they burn my skin, and the ones that don’t burn, don’t remove the hair.

Tweezing:  Effective, but OUCH! and time consuming.

Things I haven’t tried…

Laser&/Electrolysis:   The hair folicle has to be significantly darker than the skin.  Mine is not, so I am not a candidate.  Laser is the faster and less painful choice of the two.  With both be ready  to go in repeated times and to have maintenance down the road.

Threading:  Much like Big Foot & the Loch Ness monster, I hear great things about threading, but haven’t actually found a person that does it or has had it done.

Vaniqa:  Prescription strength cream.  I saw and dermatologist and got a script, but at $60 bucks a tube I didn’t have the cash at the time to get it filled.  Think the script might have expired.  This is my last hope.  And after my husband said he could feel my regrowth while kissing me the other day.  I’m ready to fork over the $60+ for a tube.

I haven’t included lip waxing or brows in this because they are much more common and smaller areas.  The results are easier to deal with.  If you have darker hair you might initially be more embarrassed, but you also have the most options.

What has worked for you??  Share with us all.  And as always if you have any questions, comments, concerns…speak up!
